I think Sanborn was shocked about “IDBYROWS” because it has some real meaning to the way he encrypted it.ie. a Freudian slip. Of my many wrong ideas i think that his visual clue may mean there is something visible when you decrypt it.
This is just the cynic in me talking, but I’m starting to think if you reversed the code and put it in the symmetric shape I posted upside down, it looks suspiciously like a mushroom cloud.
and all of my attempts have had IQ ‘s I think because I +Q =0mod26. that most of it could be like dot matrix I’s and Q’s making a nuke ? and Berlin , Russia and America in it.
That was the prevalent view in 1992.
