This, to me, is one of many great candidates for transposition which preserves Berlin. It would use 3-4 7 letter passwords… Sanborn, Kryptos, and Scheidt fit with this.
It’s workable in both directions so encryption and decryption use a complementary process.
For the most part it would give different alphabets to each letter. It was either Jim or Scheidt that said that this was the case in reference to the vigenere. This would prevent most cryptanalysis.
Regardless of it’s usefulness this put transposition back under scrutiny, for me…
